I am finally feeling comfortable in the shoes of the "Unicorn School manager." I typed up a set of behavior guidelines, put together two log books, ran a decent meeting during lunch, and put competent people on all of the shifts for next week. Life is pretty great. We now have a "general log book" for notes on attendance, behavior, etc. as well as an "education log book" for notes on what was taught and what to focus on next time. As Rick said, "We should be taking at least as many notes on the kids as we take on the cows."
I've been working inside a lot. In fact, I have no jobs that take me outdoors except for Unicorn School, and that's usually for only half an hour or so a day. I try to compensate for this by taking walks, but I've still be left feeling cooped up and lazy. It's way too cold to hoop outside, unfortunately. What to do? Well, I am once again experimenting with running. I'm following a program that starts off gently and gradually builds up. It's called Couch to 5k. (Although, really, I don't spend much time on couches.) It stretches over nine weeks. Week 1 involves alternating running for one minute and walking for ninety seconds. By week 9, you're running for half an hour straight. A couple of my friends recently completed the program, and I'm inspired. Running has always seemed so nifty; you don't need anything but your feet.
Anyway. I started yesterday. I might run again tomorrow, if my kettle clean shift gets out in time. Hooray for fitness and sunlight.
