In the past week, I have accomplished several things and learned a few more. Here's a quick run-down of them.
Accomplished:
-I successfully completed my 24th year of life.
-I biked to and from the farm a few times. It's a little over seven miles each way. And yes, Mom, I wore a helmet.
-I baked four loaves of bread and several dozen cookies. (Grandma Gibby's ginger cookies please the crowd once again.)
-I practiced intense honesty, both with someone I know very well and with some less-deeply-known folks. Scary, exciting stuff both times.
-I harvested and hung a whole lot of garlic, both soft- and hard-necked varieties. They're hung from the rafters of a shed-like structure, and it is amazing in there. Shady, rustle-y, dusty, garlic-scented.
Learned:
-Sheep's hooves need to be trimmed regularly! See, they evolved in rocky terrain that gradually wore away their hooves, so their hooves keep growing, like fingernails or gerbil teeth. If you keep sheep on lovely, soft pasture, hoof material builds up and can cause problems. It curls under and stuff; kinda gross. I got to see some serious hoof trimming on Tuesday, including some sheep wrangling. (I actually know what sheep wrangling is now!)
-I learned to play a board game called Dixit, which is awesome. It was described to me as being like Apples to Apples, but different. And maybe better. It was a blast.
-Rhubarb leaves are poisonous! That might be an exaggeration-- maybe they're just non-edible-- but still! I hadn't ever thought about it. We pruned/managed some rhubarb plants this week, and the discarded leaves went straight into the compost rather than to the sheep, because they're not good for eating. They're not even good for sheep eating, much less human eating. The edible stems are so close to the leaves-- how do plants manage to have parts that are adjacent and visually similar be so different in invisible ways?

I love this post for lots of reasons.
Sounds like you've had fun. And Dixit is awesome, it always pleases me when someone else discovers it. Aren't the drawings lovely?
