My flight from DC to St Louis was a mess. The screen in the airport that's supposed to know everything sent me to the wrong gate, and then the right gate didn't think I was supposed to be there. Eventually, I got on the plane, but we sat on the tarmac for about an hour waiting for the weather to pass. Thankfully, I had a great book. (The Time Traveller's Wife.) The flight itself was uneventful, which is a good thing.
Grandma didn't recognize me at first-- I don't think she was looking for me yet, and then there I was. Hanging out with her has been a lot of fun. We (Grandma, Aunt Linda, me) went to see Mamma Mia! last night at the movie theatre that isn't gross. The reviews were pretty accurate-- it's not anything life-changing, but it's cute and fun, and really... what else do you expect from a movie based on ABBA songs? Grandma is thrilled with the fabric I brought from The Gambia for her to quilt, though she thinks it will be very difficult to match the colors in it. She's been showing me off to all her friends.
I've been playing phone tag with someone from SEAC for a while now. Today, we finally made contact. It turns out that I've been accepted for the position of regional coordinator. I kind of applied on a whim, but there are only 12 of us in the country, and we're the first ones. We'll be establishing the program for future regional coordinators. No pressure. It also turns out that there's a training for the position. (Oh, boy. Training.) Oh, and get this: SEAC is based in Michigan. I have no idea how this is going to work. They'll cover airfare, so I won't have to pay a dime, but I don't know when I'm going to get out there. There are a couple of options, but none of them are really ideal for me: August 19-21, 22-24, or 29-31. If I had known about this back when I'd been buying tickets, I could've gone to the 19-21 session en route back from Portland. Bummer. It sounds like things are kind of chaotic back at the SEAC office, so maybe there's still a chance that something better will pop up. (Perhaps something closer to DC?)
Other than travel issues, this means that I'll be even busier next semester! Hooray. Hopefully, most of my duties as SEAC regional coordinator will overlap with my duties as co-president of the St Mary's SEAC chapter. Cross your fingers. I am eyeing next year with a building sense of apprehension. I really need to figure out how to not get myself into all of these things.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's stick with the present for now, shall we? Right now, I am in my grandmother's guest bedroom, which is fitted with a desktop computer and a dialup connection. Tomorrow morning, I head to Dancing Rabbit. I don't know how regularly I'll be updating there, but they certainly do have internet. I'm tempted to call this visit a vacation, because I think I may just need one.
