Oh my goodness, we threw a party. The general consensus of the house is that at least 100 people came through here Friday night. Not all at once, mind you, but there were certainly upwards of 60 people at a time on the dance floor during the really hoppin' bits. The trashy beats were not only well-accepted, they were adored. Everyone was a smiling, sweaty mess, and it was so good. I can't wait for the next one. I predict we'll have one in a couple weeks. This weekend would be too soon. Next weekend is the Halloween celebration. The weekend after that... party? Let's hope so.
I went to bed somewhere around 3 AM Friday night. The alarm was set for 6 AM so that I could get up, take a shower, and toss my stuff together for the trip to Assateague. Evidently, we/Elizabeth turned off the alarm at its appointed hour and proceeded to go back to sleep. Luckily, Bonnie came to fetch me at 7:06. I threw some bare necessities into my bag and ran to meet up with the van.
As it turns out, I wasn't the only one who under-packed. The island was shockingly cold and windy, which I don't think anyone expected. We were cold. We were very, very cold. The wind blew very, very hard. It was quite uncomfortable. On the bright side, it was visually impressive. The plants were bowing over, the waves were crashing hard, and the sand was slithering across the beach. It was one of the more epic beach/landscapes I've seen.
While there, I was anxious to get back to my lines of communication. Obviously, I didn't have an internet connection in the tent, and I hadn't thought to bring my phone in my very hurried packing. I was hoping to get a call/email from Paul, but... no such luck. I was hoping he would think to update me on the situation at hand. Oh well. I did miss a couple calls from Matt (who is now in Colorado), and a few from this guy who was really into dancing with me on Friday. I called Matt back. I haven't call back the dancing guy, and I'm not sure that I will.
I collected and pressed a whole bunch of plants today. I find pressing plants to be very satisfying. It's meticulous and sort of dull, but opening the press a few days later to find a beautiful, preserved plant is so rewarding. Also, a pressed plant glued to herbarium paper looks so professional! I feel so accomplished.
I also spent some time today looking through the course offerings for next semester. How amazing does this sound:
Environmental ethics (Kate Norlock)
Into to film and media studies (Joanne Klein)
Self-defense against sexual assault
Guitar
Choir
SMP
And... I need to take "Sensation and Perception" to finish off my psyc major, but... psyc is also offering "Human Sexuality" next semester. Oh goodness. How tempting.
I wish I could work in a Women, Gender, and Sexuality minor, but I just don't think I can. I'm done with my bio minor after MD Plants finishes. I actually scared myself into thinking that my Environmental Studies minor was less far along that I had thought, but it looks like I'll be fine. I took Environmental Perspectives, Ecology and Evolution, and MD Plants, I'll cross-list my SMP, and I'm going to take Environmental Ethics. And I have a ton of credits from the EcoHouse and my independent studies. I'm totally fine on the ENST thing.
Speaking of my SMP, I need to do some work on it. I'm meeting with Debbie tomorrow for the first time in two weeks, and I really don't have that much to show her. Well, except that almost 400 people took my survey. That's pretty cool. I think I'll go through some online databases once I'm done here and put together a list of references in APA format. Proper format always looks impressive, yeah?
